2018年9月8/9日托福考试,小编特地赶来送福利,托福写作考前预测送给大家。 Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Technology designed to make our life simpler actually makes our life more complicated.
It cannot be denied thattechnology enables people to live a better and more convenient lifetoday. People have been enjoying high-tech products such as smartphones, car navigation system, and laptops, to name a few. However,it does not mean that those high-tech tools make our life easier nowthan in the past. In fact, technology makes our life far morecomplicated today as illustrated in the following parts.
High-tech tools can save lotsof labor work, but sometimes they are not as “smart” as weexpect. I would like to use car navigation system as an example. Inthe past, people could only refer to printed maps to find ways totheir destinations. Nowadays, car navigation system can automaticallyfind the right path for us. It seems that car navigation system isfar more convenient than printed maps. However, in order to installthe system, we need to download the digital maps before ahead andmake sure that our destinations are recognizable. If the system failsto recognize the destination, it sometimes does not stop navigating, but lead us to somewhere else. Once I was driving from California toa Native American Reservation in Arizona, the car navigation failedto find the right path and led me to a small town that I had neverheard of. Fortunately, I found a gas station and the employees thereshowed me the correct way. My own experience shows that high-techproducts might not be always as reliable as we expect.
Another example of howtechnology has made our life more complicated is online shopping.Nowadays, more and more people choose to shop clothes online, so tosave time and efforts. Admittedly, shopping online is convenient tosome extent compared with going to a shopping mall, because we couldstay at home and check out with several clicks. All we need to dothen is to wait until our new clothes are delivered to us. However, many people had terrible shopping experience in that the colors anddesigns of those clothes are not exactly the same as they aredescribed online. Moreover, the size might not fit us, which is notexpected either. In this case, we need to follow a complicatedreturning process, completing forms needed for returning and going tothe local express service to send the clothes back. The process ofreturning is extremely daunting, which usually takes a long time forus to get our money back.
Based on the above discussion, itcould be concluded that sometimes technology is not as convenient aswe expect. Should we just refuse to use high-tech products? I do notthink so. I believe that modern technology is still developing, andit will definitely make our life more and more comfortable andconvenient in the future.
Your community has a piece of land and is considering introducing a business to this land. Which business would you prefer?
1. A shopping mall
2. A performing art center
3. A hotel.
If mycommunity were considering introducing a business to a piece of landin our place, I would rather choose a shopping mall compared to aperforming art center or a hotel.
To beginwith, a shopping mall could benefit our local people and localeconomy. Nowadays, residents in our community are busy with theirjobs during daytime and seldom have time to drive to shopping mallsfar away. Still, they need to purchase some clothing, foods, andtechnological products. If there could be a shopping mall inside ourcommunity, it would save the residents lots of time and efforts, andmake their life more convenient. Moreover, a shopping mall couldattract lots of small businesses and chain stores, which could helpdevelop local economy. In this way, local government could collectmore tax from the stores, and the stores could gain more profits aswell.
As for aperforming art center, I believe that most our residents do not havetoo much spare time to enjoy the performances there. Besides, everyone has to eat, drink, and dress, but not all of us needs toenjoy art works. In fact, most residents tend to relax at home ortravel somewhere during weekends. Therefore, even if the performingcenter has some high quality shows, probably there will be very fewresidents who are willing to spend their money on watching them.
Among thethree choices we have, I believe the hotel is the least favored one.If our community is close to a scenic spot where tourists always cometo visit, it is meaningful to build a hotel for sure. However, thelocal residents all have their own places to stay, there is no needto build a hotel that nobody would make use of.
Based onthe above discussion, it seems that a performing art center or ahotel contributes little to local people and our community comparedto a shopping mall. Thus I prefer that the local government build ashopping mall instead of the other two.
